Rubio: The U.S. does not question the conclusions of European countries about the poisoning of Navalny with epibatidine.
In the U.S., the statement by five European countries regarding the poisoning of Alexei Navalny in a Russian prison with the poison epibatidine is considered a "disturbing message," said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at a press conference in Bratislava during his visit to Slovakia, as reported by Meduza.
"We are, of course, aware of this message. It is a disturbing message. We are aware of Mr. Navalny's case, and certainly... we have no reason to question it," Rubio told reporters.
When asked why the U.S. did not join the statement, Rubio said it was an initiative of the European countries. "We decided — that does not mean we disagree with the outcome. It was simply not our initiative. Sometimes countries take actions independently based on the intelligence they have gathered," he added. According to him, the U.S. "does not dispute" this and does not intend to "conflict with these countries" regarding the statement.
On February 14, the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands issued a joint statement saying that Alexei Navalny was poisoned in a Russian prison with epibatidine — a toxin from a tree frog. This conclusion was reached independently by researchers who studied samples of Navalny's biological materials.
