The number of deaths in the suppression of protests in Iran has risen to at least 7,002, activists reported on Thursday, according to LETA citing AP.
The U.S.-based organization "Human Rights Activists News Agency" (HRANA), which presented updated casualty figures, relies on a network of activists in Iran to confirm cases of fatalities.
On January 21, the Iranian government reported that 3,317 people had died during the protests. During previous protests, the theocratic regime of Iran provided incomplete data on the number of casualties or did not report them at all.
The "Associated Press" was unable to independently assess the death toll, as Iranian authorities restrict access to the internet and international phone communications.
