Hungarian Prime Minister Orban spoke about Clinton's proposal to attack Serbia.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban spoke about a proposal from former US President Bill Clinton to attack Serbia in 1999, which was then part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). His words were reported by Telex.
"Bill Clinton asked Hungary to open a second front and attack Serbia or at least shell them [the Serbs] from Hungary through Vojvodina (an autonomous region in Serbia with a large Hungarian population — ed.), all the way to Belgrade," Orban stated.
According to him, if there had been a politician in power at that time who "only knows how to say 'Yes, sir!'", Budapest would have been drawn into the war. Orban also noted that he asked Clinton about the fate of Hungarians in Vojvodina if they agreed to invade Serbia. However, the Hungarian Prime Minister did not receive a response from Washington.
Viktor Orban first became Prime Minister of Hungary in 1998. His term ended in 2002, and he has been leading the government again since 2010.
On March 24, 1999, NATO began the military operation "Allied Force" against the FRY without a UN mandate. The goal was to stop the "ethnic cleansing" in Kosovo and force the then-leader of the federation, Slobodan Milosevic, to accept peace conditions from Western countries.
