Few would wish to move to a country on the front line.

Immigration to Finland decreased last year. This is reported in a preliminary report published today, January 22, by the Statistics Finland.

In 2025, 50,060 people moved to Finland. This is 13,905 fewer than in 2024. However, last year's level is still quite high – it is the third largest figure since the 1990s.

Population growth in Finland continues to be supported by immigration from abroad. The annual increase was 21,000 people. By the end of December, nearly 5.66 million people lived in the country.

Against this backdrop, there has been a slight increase in birth rates in Finland. The Statistics Finland shows a total fertility rate of 1.30, whereas it was previously 1.25.

This figure summarizes age-specific fertility rates and indicates the hypothetical number of children that one woman would have over her lifetime if current conditions remain unchanged.

Earlier, the country's president, Alexander Stubb, stated that Russia does not want to end the war because it believes in the possibility of advancing in Ukraine.

"Russia does not want to end this war because it would be too costly for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin," the head of state said at the Davos breakfast dedicated to Ukraine.

At the same time, Stubb believes that the peace process is currently at a good stage, and with the involvement of the United States, the momentum has only continued. He noted the negotiations on security guarantees and the peace plan. Stubb believes that Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe will ultimately come to a common understanding.

"However, I am not sure that Russia will accept this," the president pointed out.

Stubb also stated that Russia has failed in all its objectives regarding Ukraine. The president noted that Russia is not achieving military victories in Ukraine, but thousands of Russian soldiers die on the battlefield every month.

According to Stubb, the main task now is to make Russia stop the war. He is confident that support for Ukraine must continue in every possible way, and economic pressure on the Russian Federation must be increased.
