Membership in the European Union is one of the key guarantees of security not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe, stated the country's president Volodymyr Zelensky after negotiations with the Federal Chancellor of Austria.
Despite the opposition from several European countries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to insist on his country's accession to the EU by 2027. "Membership in the European Union is one of the key guarantees of security not only for us but for all of Europe. The collective strength of Europe is possible, in particular, thanks to Ukraine's safe, technological, and economic contribution," Zelensky stated after a phone conversation with Austrian Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Tuesday, January 27.
It is for this reason that Kyiv insists on swift EU membership and hopes for support from partners, emphasized the Ukrainian president.
Zelensky thanked Austria for its assistance
During negotiations with the head of the Austrian government, Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to Austria for the assistance provided to his country's energy sector and invited Karl Nehammer to visit Ukraine, which has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion for nearly four years.
"Russia strikes at our energy sector daily to leave Ukrainians without light and heat, and it is very important for partners to respond to this. Therefore, we greatly appreciate that last week Austria allocated funds to support our energy sector," noted Zelensky. Additionally, he informed Nehammer about the content of the trilateral meetings of the Ukrainian, American, and Russian delegations in Abu Dhabi.
Currently, the prospect of Ukraine's accelerated accession to the EU is absent. Ukraine is a candidate country, and the European Commission confirms the country's progress in meeting key reform requirements. However, Kyiv still cannot begin formal negotiations for EU membership due to Hungary's veto. Informal consultations on the conditions of Ukraine's membership are already underway.
