Reuters: Trump changed plans for the takeover of Greenland due to the possibility of impeachment.
The administration of US President Donald Trump changed its plans for a military takeover of Greenland due to the possibility of impeachment for the American leader. This was reported by Reuters, citing sources.
The agency writes that outrage over the issue of Greenland intensified after an interview with Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller on CNN on January 5. When asked whether the White House excludes the possibility of a military takeover of Greenland, Miller refused to answer directly.
After that, Trump and officials from his administration began to raise the issue of using force against Greenland more frequently in interviews and on social media, causing alarm within the US and among Washington's allies.
Democrats and some Republicans were concerned that the Trump administration, following events in Venezuela, might organize a major military operation again without consulting Congress beforehand.
Lawmakers called Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other White House officials. They expressed their concerns and advised the administration not to take further action. Republicans warned the Trump administration that members of Congress could initiate impeachment proceedings against the president in connection with a military invasion of Greenland.
On January 21, Trump, during a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, stated that he seeks "immediate negotiations" regarding the acquisition of Greenland and does not want to use military force for this purpose.
