U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday withdrew the invitation to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to join the newly established Council of Peace, LETA reports citing AFP.
"Let this letter serve as notice that the Council of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada's membership," Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social.
The invitation was rescinded after Carney responded on Thursday to Trump's statement made at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he said, "Canada lives off the United States."
"Canada does not live off the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadians," Carney stated while addressing the citizens of the country in Quebec ahead of a new parliamentary session, emphasizing the "significant partnership" between the two countries.
A source in the Canadian government earlier this week reported that Canada would not pay for a seat on the Council of Peace, despite Carney initially expressing willingness to accept the invitation.
Before his speech in Quebec, Carney participated in the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he received applause on Tuesday for acknowledging in his address that there has been a "break" in the rules-based world order led by the United States.
In his speech, Carney stated that countries like Canada, which thrived during the era of "American hegemony," need to realize that a new reality has emerged and that "concessions" will not protect them from aggression by great powers.
The speech generated widespread international resonance. Many believed that Carney hinted at Trump's destructive influence on international politics, although his name was not mentioned directly.
Trump reacted to Carney's address, making sharp remarks about the Canadian Prime Minister in Davos on Wednesday.
"Yesterday I watched your Prime Minister. He was ungrateful," Trump said. "Canada lives off the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you decide to make statements."
