Experts on the U.S. President's efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
The first year of Donald Trump's second term as President of the United States has come to an end. As is known, the head of the White House spent a lot of time and energy trying to achieve an end to the war in the very heart of Europe. Experts interviewed by Latvian Radio, however, assured that Trump's mission was doomed to failure from the very beginning.
Security researcher and head of the Northern Dimension at the German Marshall Fund Kristīne Berziņa believes that Trump overestimated his abilities. "Trump thought that his previously good relations with Putin would allow him to reach an agreement more easily. And his approach was completely different. While the administration of President Joe Biden and Europeans condemned Russia's full-scale invasion from the outset, Trump believed he should be more friendly towards Russia, offering it the opportunity to regain its former international status, the chance to earn again.
To show not just respect, but to invite Putin to Alaska and host him like no one else, in a way that even kings are not received, hoping that then there might be a chance to achieve the desired decision. But he failed. He could not persuade Putin, as Putin does not want to end the war. And considering that Ukraine wants to continue to exist, and this is not a matter of choice whether Ukraine will fight or not, everything is still at an impasse," Berziņa said in an interview with Latvian Radio.
President of the Baltic Security Fund Oleks Nikers also considers Trump's strategy to end the war in Ukraine unsuccessful: "We all subconsciously believe in miracles and magic. Of course, this war could not be ended in 24 hours. Seeing what Trump was doing, it was completely clear that this would definitely not work, because the only chance to end the war is to respond to the Russians with brutal force.
Of course, everything happened completely the opposite. And from the very beginning, it was clear that this Trump mission had failed, and we are seeing that now."
