Half of Afghans Have Had Their Entry Permits to Germany Revoked

When the current government of Germany came to power, more than 2300 Afghans hoped that Berlin would fulfill its promise to accept them. However, many of them were not allowed to come to Germany, DW reports.

Almost every second one of the 2308 Afghans who were living in Pakistan at the time the current ruling coalition came to power in Germany, and to whom the previous German government had already promised entry permits to Germany, has been denied this. This data is provided in the response of the German government to a parliamentary question from the Left Party, as reported on Tuesday, January 20, by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.

According to the publication, after the current federal government took office in May 2025, 788 Afghans arrived in Germany, while about 410 others are in the process of leaving Pakistan.

Upon coming to power, the new government, consisting of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), suspended the resettlement programs for Afghan refugees. It is reported that in recent weeks, several hundred Afghans with entry permits have flown to Germany from Pakistan, but they still had to undergo security checks. Meanwhile, hundreds of Afghans, on the contrary, have been denied entry.

The Left Party Calls the Government's Actions Shameful

Clara Bünger, a representative of the Left Party on refugee policy, sharply criticized the government's actions. "The fact that the federal government has simply abandoned half of the Afghans who are in danger and to whom Germany promised entry is irresponsible, undignified, and morally unacceptable," she stated to the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.

Bünger emphasized that these Afghans had received housing and care in Pakistan for several years with the support of Germany while waiting for their planned entry into Germany. The Left Party representative insists that Berlin cannot simply wash its hands of any responsibility for these people and "abandon them to the mercy of the inhumane and misogynistic Taliban regime."
