Reuters: Fratzscher considered Trump's threat of a 10% tariff a sign of Europe's weakness.

The threat from U.S. President Donald Trump to impose a 10 percent tariff on several European countries due to the situation surrounding Greenland is a sign of Europe's weakness. This opinion was expressed by Marcel Fratzscher, head of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), as quoted by Reuters.

"The threat of tariffs from President Trump to punish European countries over Greenland is a sign of Europe's weakness and its inability to act," the expert is convinced.

According to Fratzscher, European countries have repeatedly made concessions to the White House instead of standing up for their interests.

"This mistake will now haunt us... [Trump] will continue to blackmail Europe until Europe... shows firmness of character and starts to act more wisely," summarized the head of DIW.

As announced by Trump, starting from February 1, 2026, a 10 percent tariff will be imposed, which will increase to 25 percent in June. These tariffs will affect Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, as well as the United Kingdom and Norway, which are not part of the European Union.
