In the U.S., there are proposals to extend the action of the 'Peace Council', created for the Gaza Strip, to Venezuela, Ukraine, and other crisis regions, sources told FT, DW reports.
American officials are proposing to expand the scope of the 'Peace Council', created to implement a peace plan for the Gaza Strip and headed by U.S. President Donald Trump, to Ukraine, Venezuela, and other crisis regions of the world. This was reported by the British newspaper Financial Times (FT) on Friday, January 16, citing sources.
According to the publication, the relevant plan may be presented at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, which opens on January 20.
At this stage, the Trump-controlled 'Peace Council' is supposed to focus on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip and not expand into other areas, an unnamed American official stated in an interview with FT on January 16.
Still, Western and Arab diplomats are expressing concern over such a prospect, the publication notes. In particular, they fear that the 'Peace Council' could turn into some structure operating parallel to the UN.
'Peace Council' for Venezuela and Ukraine
Diplomatic sources told FT that U.S. officials have proposed to extend the 'Peace Council' to Venezuela, which has been in crisis since the U.S. military conducted an operation to capture the country's ruler, Nicolás Maduro.
As for Ukraine, a high-ranking Kyiv official involved in negotiations with the U.S. stated that a separate 'Peace Council', also headed by Trump, is an important part of proposals to end Russia's war against Ukraine. 'Currently, the establishment of this council is being proposed specifically to address the Ukrainian-Russian issue,' FT quotes its interlocutor.
According to him, the Ukrainian 'Peace Council' would include representatives from Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and NATO and would oversee the implementation of a 20-point peace plan that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calls '90% ready'.
Meanwhile, Moscow is not ready to back down from a number of its demands. One of the issues on which the parties still have no compromise is possible territorial concessions from Ukraine. Kyiv considers this position unacceptable.
