Trump warned of 'very tough actions' if Iran hangs protesters

U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday of 'very tough actions' against Iran if the country's authorities carry out threats to hang some protesters, LETA reported citing AFP.

Iranian authorities insist that they have regained control over the country after mass protests that took place every night from Thursday across the nation, becoming one of the most serious challenges for Iran's clerical leadership since it came to power after the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

Human rights organizations accuse the Iranian government of shooting many protesters and concealing the scale of the repression by blocking the internet.

Trump, who previously promised protesters in Iran that 'help is on the way,' told CBS News that the U.S. would take action if Iran begins executing protesters by hanging.

Tehran's prosecutor had previously reported that Iranian authorities intend to charge a number of detained protesters with 'war against God' ('moharebeh'). In Iran, this crime is punishable by death.

'We will respond very harshly if they do this,' Trump said, having repeatedly threatened Iran with military intervention.

'When they start killing thousands of people — and now you’re telling me about hangings. Let’s see how that works out for them,' he added.

On Tuesday, international telephone connections were restored in Iran, but only for outgoing calls. The quality of the connection was poor, and conversations were often interrupted.
