According to U.S. President Trump, the transfer of Greenland to U.S. control is necessary for the creation of the American missile defense system "Iron Dome." The heads of the foreign ministries of Denmark and Greenland, Rasmussen and Motzfeldt, will be received in Washington.
U.S. President Donald Trump has once again confirmed his plans to take control of Greenland. Control over this Arctic island is crucial for the establishment of the American missile defense system "Iron Dome," he wrote on Wednesday, January 14, on his platform Truth Social.
According to Trump, NATO should lead the process of transferring Greenland to the U.S. "If we don’t do it, Russia or China will," he believes. The American president also expressed confidence that the transfer of the Danish island to U.S. control would make the North Atlantic Alliance "much more powerful and effective." "Everything else is unacceptable," he added.
On the same day, a meeting will take place in Washington between Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland's Minister of Independence and Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldt with U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance. The agenda will focus on the situation regarding Trump’s plans for Greenland.
Trump Threatens to Take Greenland by Force
In early January, Trump once again threatened to use force to take Greenland. "Regarding Greenland, we will do something, whether they like it or not," he stated at the White House. Trump referred to U.S. national security interests and claimed that there are too many Russian and Chinese ships around Greenland. "We will not allow Russia or China to occupy Greenland," he emphasized. At the same time, the White House expressed confidence that Russians or Chinese would take Greenland if Americans did not.
The White House is already preparing a draft agreement on free association, which Donald Trump will propose to the authorities of Greenland, bypassing official Copenhagen. According to such a treaty, U.S. armed forces could have complete freedom of action on the island in exchange for duty-free trade. Politico, citing experts and sources in Washington, reported that the U.S. intends to establish control over Greenland by the end of 2026.
Danish authorities call the pressure on Greenland unacceptable and emphasize that the Arctic region "wants to determine its own future" without interference from other countries. Leaders of political parties in Greenland, in a joint statement on January 9, called for allowing the island's residents to determine their own future. EU countries support Denmark and Greenland in their opposition to the U.S.
The U.S. is Developing the "Iron Dome"
Trump presented the project for creating the "Iron Dome" in May 2025. The American missile defense system is to be modeled after Israel's "Iron Dome" and will be designed to protect against missiles launched from around the world, including from space.
According to media reports, it will have four levels of protection: a space detection layer, targeting for warning and tracking missiles, as well as missile defense; and three ground layers consisting of missile interception systems, radar arrays, and possibly lasers. The project is estimated to cost 175 billion euros. The system is expected to be operational by 2028.
