The German Chancellor urged the President of Ukraine to ensure that young Ukrainians serve their country within its borders and do not leave for Germany and other states.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky must guarantee that young Ukrainian men will serve their country on the territory of Ukraine so that they do not "leave for Germany, Poland, or France." This statement was made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference following the "coalition of the willing" meeting in Paris.
On the same day, the Prime Minister of Bavaria and leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), which is part of the ruling coalition in Germany, Markus Söder expressed the opinion that ensuring the security of Ukraine should prioritize the involvement of Ukrainian servicemen.
To achieve the same goal, he believes that Ukrainian refugees should be sent back to their homeland from Germany. "Before young German men have to go to Ukraine, young Ukrainian men should return to their homeland from Germany. Young Ukrainian men must go back to their homeland to defend their country," Söder emphasized during a closed meeting of the CSU at the Seeon Monastery.
Germany Ready to Participate in Maintaining Peace in Ukraine
At the same time, the CSU leader pointed out that Germany is generally ready to participate in monitoring the ceasefire in Ukraine. "But whether soldiers can ensure (compliance with this regime - Ed.) remains to be seen," he noted.
As stated after the "coalition of the willing" meeting in Paris, Chancellor Friedrich Merz does not rule out the participation of German servicemen in maintaining peace in Ukraine, provided that they will not serve on the territory of this country. A likely solution would be the deployment of German peacekeepers in one of the NATO countries bordering Ukraine, according to his words.
