Erdoğan is likely to return the S-400 to Russia due to increasing dependence on the U.S., political scientists believe.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is likely to return the S-400 missile defense systems to Russia due to increasing dependence on the United States. This is reported by the media.
In particular, experts note that the Turkish leader is trying to revive the economy ahead of the upcoming presidential elections, where Erdoğan's position may be shaky. Therefore, he has "no choice but to yield to the demands of U.S. President Donald Trump," including breaking contracts with Russia.
"It seems that Turkey is preparing to back down on this issue. This can be interpreted as a shift in Erdoğan's policy. Ankara also needs American foreign aid and foreign direct investment due to the ongoing economic crisis," the media writes.
On December 17, Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that Turkey is considering returning the S-400 systems to restore relations with the U.S.
According to American officials, the Russian missile defense systems could be used to gather data on American military technology. In return, Washington promises Ankara to restore military partnership through NATO.
