U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy for Greenland, LETA reports citing AP.

"Jeff understands how important Greenland is to our national security, and he will vigorously advocate for our country's interests for the safety and survival of our allies and the entire world," Trump said in a statement released on Sunday evening.

The 54-year-old Republican Landry will retain his position as governor of Louisiana, a role he has held since 2024. From 2016 to 2024, Landry served as the state's attorney general, and from 2011 to 2013, he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Louisiana.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland, which is governed by Denmark, should come under U.S. control.

In August, Danish authorities summoned the U.S. ambassador over reports that at least three people connected to Trump were conducting secret influence operations in Greenland.

Trump emphasizes that Greenland is crucial for U.S. security and does not rule out the possibility of seizing the island by military force, despite Denmark, like the U.S., being a NATO member.
