China has learned to block satellite internet using jamming drones.
China has successfully tested a technology to suppress satellite internet. This was reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
The experiment was conducted by scientists from Zhejiang University and Beijing Institute of Technology. They simulated a situation in which the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) must deprive its opponent of Starlink satellite communication in an area comparable to Taiwan. The specialists managed to jam the internet, but with the use of a large amount of equipment.
According to the scientists, Starlink and other satellite networks are distinguished by a constantly changing coverage map, which complicates blocking. They emphasized that an effective electronic warfare (EW) system could be set up using up to 2000 drones. "Hundreds or thousands of small synchronized jammers would need to be deployed across the sky — on drones, balloons, or aircraft," the researchers stated. They said that this way, an electromagnetic shield could be created over the enemy's territory.
The article states that under ideal conditions, to successfully block satellite internet in the territory of Taiwan, 935 coordinated jammers would need to be used. If cheaper equipment is applied, then 2000 drones would have to be deployed.
