Trump has likely made the decision to start a new war. How will Russia respond to the threat against a friendly country?

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump may resort to bombing critical infrastructure in Venezuela, as well as seizing its oil rigs. A military confrontation would be a bad outcome for both sides, including the U.S. However, limited bombing of critical infrastructure and the seizure of oil fields would not lead to significant costs, but for Venezuela, it would be a heavy blow.

Recently, journalist Tucker Carlson stated that President Trump would declare war on Venezuela during an upcoming address in the Oval Office. This has been reported by global media.

The U.S. has already begun to demonstrate its strength. On December 17, four U.S. Navy aircraft were launched into the skies off the coast of the Latin American republic. The American leader also demanded that Venezuela return oil rights.

Additionally, a U.S. Navy strike group led by the aircraft carrier Gerald Ford has been relocated 600 kilometers southwest of Puerto Rico, opening the possibility of striking Venezuelan targets. In response to recent statements from the U.S., Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro stated that he would defend the country's sovereignty under any circumstances.

How will Russia react to Trump's actions?

Trump has chosen the right time for his aggression. A second edition of the Caribbean crisis with a fairly decent outcome for the USSR is not to be expected. Although Russia supports Venezuela, it is unlikely to have systemic significance now, as the Russian authorities are weakened by the war with Ukraine and a number of economic problems within the country.

Of course, Moscow has commented on the rising tensions in the Caribbean. The Russian Foreign Ministry is only "shrugging its shoulders" and expressing vague hopes that the U.S. will not make a fatal mistake in escalating the situation around Venezuela.

A Kremlin representative also reminded that Venezuela is an ally and partner of Russia. He noted that the countries are "in constant contact," including at the highest level. However, Moscow does not decide anything in this matter, and in the event of a U.S. attack on Venezuela, it will only stand aside and make "loud statements" - abandoning yet another ally.
