Due to a landslide that led to the sinking of two ships in a river port in Peru, at least 12 people, including three children, died on Monday, and several dozen are considered missing, authorities reported, according to LETA citing AFP.
The ships sank in the port of Iparia, located in the Ucayali region of the Amazon jungle, according to a police report cited by the Andina agency.
One of the ships had about 50 passengers on board, while the other had no one, reported the National Center for Emergency Operations (COEN).
By phone, Navy Captain Jonathan Novoa stated that the bodies of nine deceased individuals had been recovered, 25 people were injured, and 40 are considered missing.
Authorities were interviewing relatives gathered at the scene of the tragedy to clarify the exact number of missing persons.
On the platform X, the COEN center reported that the tragedy occurred due to the erosion of the banks of the Ucayali River.
According to Novoa, the rescue operations are complicated by the swift current, whirlpools in the river, and the fog that was present at the time of the disaster.
