Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan believes that a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia could ensure peace in the region for the next 50-70 years.
He said this in an interview with Welt am Sonntag, excerpts of which were provided by the Turkish agency Anadolu.
Speaking about the Russian-Ukrainian war, Fidan stated that compared to the past, both sides are now more prepared for peace, as they have seen the scale of human suffering and destruction.
"Putin is also ready to accept a ceasefire and a comprehensive peace agreement under certain conditions. This has been communicated to the Ukrainian side, and we are involved in some aspects of this process. This war is very costly for Russia as well," the minister said.
He emphasized that a potential peace agreement must contain clear commitments from both sides not to attack each other "under any circumstances."
"If an agreement can be reached on this issue, peace can be ensured in the region for 50, 60, 70 years. Perhaps even longer," the Turkish minister is convinced.
At the same time, he noted that a peace agreement does not mean abandoning one's own security measures. "Neither Europeans nor Russians will do this; on the contrary – they will continue to prepare for various scenarios. NATO will do the same. Time will tell how sustainable peace will be. However, Russia also incurs economic and social losses and benefits from the agreement," Fidan said.
