The President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda does not consider it a coincidence that the timing of discussions on the new American peace plan for Ukraine coincides with a new large-scale incursion of balloons from Belarus.
Commenting on the situation with the balloons, Nausėda urged looking at this story from a broader perspective.
"Currently, a peace plan is being discussed that has caused both surprise and a certain confusion in the international community, because the main elements of the plan are quite beneficial for Russia and create an atmosphere in which authoritarian regimes can take advantage of the current moment and attempt to further destabilize the situation. It is an interesting coincidence that the mass incursions of balloons are happening just as discussions are taking place on how to improve the plan so that Ukraine is not left alone," noted Gitanas Nausėda.
He added that if the situation does not change, nothing prevents Lithuania from closing the border again.
"Just as we opened the checkpoints, we can close them at any moment if there are no new signals that the (Belarusian) regime wants us to coexist in a civilized manner. If attacks are repeated and we see new attempts at destabilization – of course, such decisions will be made," said the President of Lithuania.
As is known, on November 24, Lithuania reported the "most tense" night due to a massive incursion of balloons from Belarus. Because of them, Vilnius Airport was closed once again. Some balloons also entered neighboring Latvia.
Due to earlier similar incidents, Lithuania decided to close the border with Belarus for a month – initially until November 30, but was forced to reconsider the decision after Belarus's countermeasures, which affected Lithuanian carriers stuck in the country.
