On Wednesday, the Lithuanian government decided to open two border crossing points with Belarus that had been temporarily closed for more than two weeks, reports LRT.
“Considering the decisions of the National Security Commission made on November 18 of this year, that the circumstances have changed and the restrictions on crossing the state border established on October 29, 2025 (...) are no longer necessary to ensure internal security, it is advisable to lift the restrictions established by the aforementioned resolution (...),” said Lithuanian Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovich at a meeting.
The border crossing points "Mėdininkai" and "Šalčininkai" will be opened. Their operations will resume from Thursday.
Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė said on Tuesday that the National Security Commission recommends opening these border crossings, considering that the flow of smuggling balloons has decreased and the operation of Vilnius Airport is no longer disrupted. She reported that preparations for the border opening will take one day. Furthermore, the Prime Minister emphasized that if the threat level rises, the border will be closed again.
It should be noted that due to the border closure, thousands of trucks and semi-trailers with Lithuanian license plates have been stranded in Belarus. Belarusians are taking them to parking lots, where they charge a fee of 120 euros per day.
What will happen to the Lithuanian trucks? Lithuanian Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovich says there is currently no answer regarding the return of the stranded Lithuanian trucks.
