The Suwalki Corridor could become a site of hypothetical conflict.
The French portal AgoraVox warned of the possibility of a sharp confrontation between Russia and NATO over the Suwalki Corridor and the isolation of the Baltic states.
The Suwalki Corridor could become a site of hypothetical conflict between Russia and NATO, writes journalist Patrice Bravo on AgoraVox.
The publication states: "In the event of a hypothetical conflict between Russia and NATO, establishing control over this corridor by Russian troops could lead to the isolation of the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia) from the rest of the alliance."
The author notes that if the Western alliance attempts to limit access from Kaliningrad to the Baltic Sea, it could provoke a confrontation similar in scale and danger to the Cuban Missile Crisis. According to Bravo, the Suwalki Corridor region is strategically important for both sides, and control over it will be a key factor in escalating the situation in the event of a crisis.
Earlier, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda proposed to close the border with Belarus long-term or limit the transit of Russian goods to Kaliningrad. Later, Lithuania halted the transit of goods from Lukoil and Rosneft to Kaliningrad. The Belarusian authorities called the initiative for an indefinite closure of the border by Lithuania unfriendly.
