Belarus Strikes Back: Minsk Imposes Ban on Transport from Latvia

In response to Lithuania closing its border, Belarus imposed a ban on the movement of trucks from the EU across its territory, as well as trailers (semi-trailers) from Poland and Lithuania. Other restrictions against freight transport from EU countries have also come into effect.

According to Belarusian media reports, under the ban that has already come into effect, the following transport cannot move through the territory of Belarus:

  • trucks and tractors registered in European Union member states;
  • trailers (semi-trailers) registered in Poland and Lithuania;
  • passenger cars registered in Poland that are engaged in international transport according to individual waybills or international consignment notes "CMR."

All vehicles that fall under the ban and are currently on the territory of Belarus must move to specially designated locations listed in the decree.

However, the ban does not apply if the vehicle is transporting certain categories of goods, including postal shipments, humanitarian cargo, live animals, medical devices, raw materials for the production of veterinary medicines, blood, human organs and tissues, and others.

Empty vehicles, trailers (semi-trailers) returning to the European Union after transporting goods are also exempt from the ban.

The decree has come into effect and will remain in force until December 31, 2027.

Belarus has also restricted the movement of Lithuanian trucks on its territory. Now, trucks, tractors, and trailers (semi-trailers) with Lithuanian registration can only cross the border at the Belarusian-Lithuanian section, which is currently closed until November 30.

Earlier, Otkrito.lv reported that starting November 1, Latvian authorities restricted the movement of irregular international bus services transporting passengers to Belarus and Russia.
