U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping intend to overcome the differences between their countries and deepen the partnership between Washington and Beijing. Both leaders stated this before the start of negotiations in Busan, South Korea, on Thursday, October 30.
Trump: China and the U.S. Already Agree on Many Things
Trump referred to Xi as a "longtime friend" and a "great leader of a great country." He expressed hope that "fantastic relations will be established between the U.S. and China for a long time."
"We will have certain discussions. I think we already agree on many things and will agree on even more right now," the U.S. president said.
Xi: China and the U.S. Should Be Friends
"It is normal for friction to arise from time to time between the two largest economies in the world," said Xi Jinping, noting that "China and the U.S. should be partners and friends." "I always believe that China’s development goes hand in hand with your vision of making America great again," Xi continued.
He added that recent negotiations took place between U.S. and Chinese delegations in the field of economy and trade. "They reached a basic consensus on addressing our core issues," stated the Chinese president.
Xi Jinping thanked Trump for his contribution to the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the resolution of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. Xi added that Beijing also seeks peace in various regions around the world.
The leaders of the U.S. and China did not answer questions from journalists. Immediately after the opening statements, the closed part of the negotiations began.
