By 2050, 20% of beaches in Italy may be submerged - scientists' forecasts

Rising sea levels and accelerating coastal erosion could lead to the disappearance of nearly 20% of Italy's beaches by 2050, reports ANSA, citing a report from the Italian Geographic Society. By the end of the century, this figure could reach 40%, significantly altering the country's landscape.

The northern part of the Adriatic Sea, as well as certain areas of the coast of Tuscany, Campania, and the island of Sardinia, are at the highest risk. According to experts, around 800,000 people live in areas that could potentially be flooded - they may need to be relocated to safer regions.

Rising sea levels threaten not only residential areas but also infrastructure and agricultural land located along the coast. The tourism sector, which accounts for a significant portion of the income in coastal regions, will be particularly vulnerable.

Specialists are calling for a reassessment of coastal protection systems. They state that existing barriers and embankments often only exacerbate erosion and are becoming increasingly costly and ineffective. Experts insist on the development of a long-term strategy for adapting to climate change that will minimize damage and preserve coastal ecosystems.
