The new president of Peru declared a state of emergency in the capital Lima on Tuesday, thus the government is trying to stop the rise in crime, LETA reported citing AP.

In recent years, the number of murders, cases of violent extortion, and attacks in public places has increased in Peru.

From January to September, the police recorded 1,690 murders compared to 1,502 cases during the same period last year.

Former President Dina Boluarte was removed from office by the Congress of Peru on October 10 after an impeachment procedure, during which lawmakers stated that she failed to address the wave of crime.

Her position was immediately taken over by the Speaker of Parliament, José Jerí.

The state of emergency in Lima will last for 30 days, the president announced in a televised address.

The government is considering various measures, including deploying the military to assist the police, as well as restricting the freedom of assembly and movement, Jerí indicated.

Later, the government published a decree officially declaring the state of emergency.

Mass protests against violence and corruption are taking place in Peru. They are organized by activists of the so-called Generation Z.

On Thursday, protesters gathered in Lima, also demanding the resignation of the new president.

One person died in the clashes, and about 100 were injured, including several police officers and journalists.

The previous president, Boluarte, also declared a 30-day state of emergency in March, but it did not have a significant impact on reducing the crime rate.
