The Congress of Peru voted to initiate impeachment proceedings against the country's president, Dina Boluarte. The emergency vote took place just hours after representatives of all political parties in Congress submitted petitions for the president's removal.

This decision was justified by the fact that the president's salary in Peru is one of the lowest on the continent, second only to Bolivia. Opposition politicians stated that the president's new salary is 30 times higher than the Peruvian minimum wage, while the poverty rate in the country is close to 30%. As of July, the president's approval rating is estimated at 2-4%.
