Trump«s Manic Pursuit of the Nobel Prize Worries Norway

Norway is concerned about the aggressive campaign of U.S. President Donald Trump, who is seeking to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Bloomberg reports.

As the agency notes, Trump has recently made several public statements expressing his desire to receive the Nobel Prize.

In particular, last week at the United Nations General Assembly, he stated: "Everyone says I should receive the Nobel Peace Prize," arguing that he and the U.S. have never received any gratitude for the Abraham Accords, which normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab countries during his first presidential term in 2020.

Trump claims that since his return to the White House in January, he has ended at least six wars.

Agency sources report that Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has raised the issue of nominating his boss for the award in conversations with European colleagues. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also been repeatedly involved in promoting Trump's nomination for the Nobel Prize.

The Nobel Committee noted "several campaigns" being conducted both publicly and privately.

Meanwhile, in Norway, tension is rising as the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate approaches. When asked about the potential reaction if Trump does not win, one Norwegian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, joked that he is considering taking a sick day on October 10.

In response to a question about concerns regarding the reaction if Trump does not win, Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said: "It simply depends on the Nobel Committee. It is important to remember that this is an independent committee."

Lobbying for candidates for the prize has occurred before, but experts believe that Trump's brash and pompous style contradicts the deeply rooted culture of Scandinavian societies, which does not encourage self-promotion, and may complicate the committee's ability to overlook his persona.

It was reported that in July, the U.S. president unexpectedly called Norwegian Finance Minister Jan Tore Sanner to discuss trade tariffs and also mentioned his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Additionally, according to the forecasting platform Polymarket, Trump's chances of winning are only 4%. Among the favorites are the network of volunteer coordination centers Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms, which organize humanitarian aid amid the war in Sudan, as well as Yulia Navalnaya.
