Fruit salads and berry smoothies have long been considered symbols of healthy eating. However, scientists warn that some popular combinations may reduce the benefits of the products. Research has shown that bananas can impair the absorption of beneficial substances from strawberries, raspberries, and other berries.

Why Bananas and Berries Are Not the "Best Pair"

Bananas remain one of the most popular fruits year-round. They are rich in potassium, help maintain heart function, promote the elimination of excess salt, and quickly satisfy the body.

However, specialists have found that when bananas are combined with berries, the body receives significantly fewer flavonoids — beneficial plant compounds that are particularly abundant in strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries.

What Scientists Found Out

The experiment was conducted by researchers from the USA, the UK, and Saudi Arabia. It involved men aged 25 to 60 years.

The volunteers were divided into several groups:

  • some drank a banana smoothie with almond milk;

  • others had a berry smoothie with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and yogurt;

  • the third group took special capsules containing flavonoids.

After that, the participants provided blood and urine samples so that scientists could assess the level of beneficial compounds in the body.

What’s the Problem with Bananas

The results showed that people who consumed banana smoothies together with berries had significantly lower levels of flavonoids.

The reason is the enzyme polyphenol oxidase found in bananas. It breaks down some of the beneficial compounds from the berries and reduces their absorption.

According to specialists, the flavonoid content in such a combination can decrease by almost five times.

Benefits of Flavonoids

Flavonoids help:

  • protect the heart and blood vessels;

  • combat oxidative stress;

  • support liver health;

  • slow down aging processes;

  • reduce the risk of certain diseases.

These substances are found not only in berries but also in tea, cocoa, apples, grapes, and pears.

Experts recommend not mixing bananas with berries in the same smoothie or fruit plate if you want to maximize the benefits of flavonoids. It is better to consume these products at different times of the day: for example, save the banana for a morning snack and the berries for a separate dessert or evening meal.
