Beer for a Hangover Can Lead to Thrombosis: Opinion of a Therapist

Treating a hangover with beer can lead to thrombosis, warned therapist Elena Kunakovskaya.

According to the specialist, a hangover is a state of pronounced intoxication of the body after alcohol abuse. It is not just an unpleasant morning, but poisoning and dehydration: ethanol in the liver is broken down into acetaldehyde, which is 10-30 times more toxic than alcohol. If the dose was too large, the liver does not have time to process the toxin into safe acetic acid, and acetaldehyde accumulates, causing nausea, headache, and other symptoms.

Kunakovskaya emphasized that a hangover is especially dangerous for people with chronic diseases or after prolonged binge drinking. During this period, blood viscosity increases and blood pressure fluctuates. As a result, the risk of hypertensive crisis, stroke, heart attack, and arrhythmia increases. Additionally, due to the effects of alcohol, the pancreas may become inflamed, which threatens acute pancreatitis.

The expert noted that a new dose of alcohol to relieve symptoms not only forms dependence but can also mask serious problems, such as pancreatitis or internal bleeding. The best way to recover is time, sleep, and water with electrolytes.
