Easter at the Dacha

On Easter, there is a desire to go to the dacha, as these days also mark the long-awaited arrival of spring. However, this time, especially Sunday, is better spent with family, following traditions and customs: blessing dyed eggs and kulich, enjoying good company, and refraining from work in the garden and vegetable patch. The Resurrection of Christ is a special holiday rich in traditions and interesting signs that can be useful for dacha owners and gardeners in the coming year.

The Holiday of Life

The holiday has pagan roots, as the arrival of warmth and spring was always considered by our ancestors a symbol of rebirth, awakening of all living things, and hope for a better future, including a good harvest, which was always mentioned in prayers. The Catholic Church celebrates the Resurrection of Christ according to the new calendar, and the date of the celebration coincides with the Orthodox one very rarely. In 2026, Catholic Easter is celebrated on April 5, 48 days after the beginning of Lent.

Easter Traditions and Customs

Many believe that on this day, holy water has special power, so they bring food and water to the church, which will be blessed and rejuvenate the body. They also bring items belonging to relatives for the priest to sprinkle with holy water:

  • for the seriously ill for healing

  • for the healthy – for strengthening the mind

  • for the deceased – for the forgiveness of sins.

A traditional family feast during the Easter days, for everyone and not just for believers, includes:

  • Easter kulich (sweet bread)

  • dyed eggs

  • Cahors and other red fortified wines

  • meat dishes.

Why Bake Kulich

The tradition of baking sweet kulich for Easter is linked to an ancient legend, according to which the Son of God, after His miraculous resurrection, would join the apostles at their meals. A place at the head of the table was always left empty for Him, and bread was always laid there for Jesus. Times changed, and bread began to be left in a special place in churches, after which it was distributed to parishioners. It is believed that the family is a small Church, so many housewives began to bake tall kulich in the shape of a cylinder for the holiday and bless them at the all-night service.

The Easter Bunny

In many Catholic countries, in addition to fragrant pastries and eggs, rabbits are a popular symbol of the holiday. They are known for their fertility, and it is no surprise that they were chosen by people as a symbol of fertility and prosperity that the bright day of Christ's Resurrection brings.

How to Dye Eggs Without Chemicals

The egg symbolizes the birth of life and immortality, which is why it has become the second symbol of Easter. They have been dyed for the holiday since ancient times – red was previously preferred, symbolizing the blood shed by the Savior for the salvation of mankind. Of course, today a variety of shades are used for dyeing, utilizing not only purchased dyes but also natural ones.

  • Onion peel broth can change the color of white eggs from beige to dark orange.

  • Regular beet juice – for brown and pink colors.

  • Yellow can be achieved by boiling eggs with turmeric.

  • Green – with nettles or spinach.

Easter Beliefs and Signs for Gardeners

During Easter week:

  • it is not customary to work on the plot or in the house; construction and gardening work brings misfortune and failure, but one can take care of children and animals, help the poor and needy. Gardeners pay attention to signs that have always come true. It is believed that this day has special power, so it is important to notice every change in nature and the weather:

  • a sunny and clear day – for a warm summer and generous harvest;

  • if it is cloudy on the second day of Easter – for a dry season, while bright sunshine indicates rainy weather for the summer;

  • being the first to return after the Easter morning service – a good omen, as it is believed that one can encounter luck and happiness on the way, accompanied by the fertility of the land;

  • when leaving the house after breaking the fast, one should look around and, noticing something good, think of it as a personal profitable venture. This sign is particularly suitable for novice dacha owners or those looking to acquire a private home.

How to Attract Luck for Gardeners

Take a look at the yard of a wealthy neighbor on your way home from church, who has a larger harvest and a better house, admire his well-kept beds and flowerbeds, and wish him all the best in developing his farm, and for yourself – to do no worse. This will serve as inspiration for improving your own plot, and the wish will return to you, making your work go smoothly.

Bright Easter Sunday is best spent with family, in peace and love, resting from everyday worries. Bake delicious kulich, decorate eggs, and make an original Easter basket by hand – then the holiday will be a great success!
