Scientists Debunk the Myth of the Uselessness of Collagen Supplements

Collagen supplements may provide a moderate effect for the skin and joints. This conclusion was reached by scientists after analyzing over 100 clinical studies. This is reported by The Conversation.

Collagen is a protein responsible for skin elasticity, bone strength, and joint function. Its synthesis decreases with age. Hydrolyzed collagen, broken down into peptides, is used in supplements and is said to be better absorbed. An analysis of data from nearly eight thousand people confirmed a number of positive effects: improved muscle condition, reduced pain in osteoarthritis, and increased skin hydration. Moreover, regular and prolonged intake proved to be more important than a short-term course.

The results of studies were heterogeneous: in more recent works, the improvement in skin elasticity was less pronounced, while the moisturizing effect, on the contrary, intensified. Most studies were deemed unreliable due to differences in methods, dosages, assessment techniques, as well as due to short-term duration and small sample sizes.

The effectiveness of supplements is also influenced by their diversity: collagen is obtained from various sources (animal and marine organisms), and processing methods vary. Scientists note that collagen is not a universal remedy but can provide a moderate positive effect.
