What things should not be washed in hot water: 4 types of clothing that can be easily damaged

Hot water does indeed help to more effectively deal with dirt and bacteria, but not all clothing can withstand high temperatures. If items are regularly washed at maximum heat, the fabric may lose its shape, color, and elasticity. As a result, clothing shrinks, deforms, or becomes stiff. To keep your favorite items in good condition, it is important to consider the characteristics of different materials.

Leather Products

Leather clothing and accessories require particularly careful maintenance. High temperatures and excess moisture can destroy the structure of the material. After washing in hot water, leather dries out, becomes rough, and over time may develop cracks.

To clean such items, it is better to use a soft cloth, warm water, and special leather care products. After cleaning, the surface should be gently wiped and the item allowed to dry at room temperature. To maintain the softness of the material, it is recommended to additionally use special creams or lotions.

Delicate Fabrics

Wool, cashmere, silk, and lace are materials that do not tolerate high temperatures well. When washed in hot water, natural fibers can shrink, causing the item to decrease in size and lose its shape.

Woolen items can felt and become stiff, cashmere loses its softness, and silk loses its shine and strength. Therefore, such items are better washed in cold or slightly warm water. When machine washing, it is advisable to use a delicate cycle and special laundry bags. It is better to dry such items on a flat surface away from radiators and direct sunlight.

Sportswear

Many sports items are made from elastic synthetic materials, such as Lycra or Spandex. These fabrics provide comfort and freedom of movement, but do not tolerate hot water well.

At high temperatures, the fibers gradually lose elasticity, causing the clothing to stretch or, conversely, shrink and hold its shape poorly. Additionally, the special coating responsible for ventilation and moisture wicking may break down. For such items, it is better to choose cold water and mild detergents. Fabric softeners are not recommended, as they can reduce the breathability of the fabric.

Denim Products

Denim is considered a durable material, but frequent washing in hot water can negatively affect its appearance. High temperatures contribute to fading of the fabric and may lead to shrinkage.

To preserve the color and density of denim fabric, it is recommended to wash such items as infrequently as possible and to choose cold water. Before washing, it is better to turn the items inside out — this helps protect the color and prevent light streaks from appearing at the creases.

Choosing the right washing temperature helps maintain the fabric structure, shape, and color of clothing. Therefore, before loading items into the washing machine, it is worth paying attention to the recommendations on the label — this is a simple way to extend the lifespan of your favorite wardrobe.
