One or Two Blankets: How Couples Sleep Better

The question of how couples should sleep — under one blanket or under different ones — has been discussed for a long time. Some specialists believe that sleeping together strengthens relationships, while others are convinced that it is healthier for each partner to have their own space.

Rehabilitation physician and candidate of medical sciences Maria Konovalova explained the arguments put forward by supporters of different approaches.

Why Specialists Recommend Different Blankets

According to the doctor, the main task of nighttime rest is to ensure continuous sleep. The first four hours of the night are especially important, as the body actively undergoes recovery processes.

During this time, the body:

  • initiates detoxification processes
  • restores energy resources
  • activates the immune system
  • processes emotional experiences

Any disturbances — tugging on the blanket, accidental touches, snoring, or talking — can interrupt sleep and worsen its quality. Therefore, sleep specialists often recommend that couples use different blankets so that each person can sleep peacefully.

Why Many Find It Important to Sleep Together

Nevertheless, there are psychological benefits to sleeping together. People often associate sleeping next to a partner with a sense of safety and emotional closeness.

Some admit that they fall asleep more easily when:

  • their partner is nearby
  • they have the opportunity to hug their loved one
  • familiar evening rituals are maintained

According to specialists, such habits develop over time and can be part of the emotional attachment between spouses.

Seven Rules for Comfortable Joint Sleep

If a couple prefers to sleep together, the doctor recommends following several rules.

1. Monitor the climate in the bedroom

The optimal temperature is 20–21 °C, with humidity around 50%.

2. Fall asleep without phones

It’s better to spend time on calm communication or cuddling.

3. Use earplugs if snoring occurs

This will help avoid frequent awakenings.

4. Respect your partner's sleep schedule

If one wants to sleep, it’s best to turn off the lights and TV.

5. Don’t wake your partner when going to bed late

Get into bed quietly, without talking.

6. Use soft light at night

It’s better to turn on a nightlight instead of bright lighting.

7. Don’t wake your spouse in the morning

If you need to get up early, it’s better to do so as quietly as possible.

Conclusion

Specialists note that there is no universal solution. For some couples, sleeping together is better, while for others, separate blankets or even different beds are more suitable. The main thing is that both partners feel comfortable and get enough sleep.
