Convicted Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein gave his first extensive interview from prison. In a conversation with journalists, he once again rejected the accusations of rape and stated that his career was destroyed after public statements from well-known actresses, including Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Accusations Against the Actresses
The 73-year-old producer stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that it was the revelations from the actresses that led to his downfall.
According to Weinstein, the statements from Rosanna Arquette, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie resulted in the destruction of his reputation and career.
At the same time, he reiterated that he does not acknowledge the accusations of sexualized violence. The producer stated that his behavior may have been "excessively persistent," but he insists that he did not commit any crimes.
The Scandal's History
The scandal surrounding the producer began in 2017 after an investigation by The New York Times. The publication included statements from actresses who spoke about harassment by Weinstein.
Gwyneth Paltrow recalled that early in her career, she rejected the producer when he invited her to his hotel room. Angelina Jolie also reported an unpleasant experience with him in her youth.
The investigation became the starting point for the global #MeToo movement, during which thousands of women around the world shared their experiences of sexual harassment in various fields.
Complaints About Prison Conditions
In the interview, Weinstein also spoke about his life in prison. According to him, the conditions at Rikers Island are extremely harsh.
The producer claims that he spends up to 23 hours a day in solitary confinement and is virtually deprived of communication. He also reported serious health issues, including diabetes and cancer, which have left him using a wheelchair.
Additionally, Weinstein stated that he fears possible attacks from other inmates.
Sentences
In February 2020, the producer was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and coercion into intimacy.
However, in April 2024, the court overturned this sentence due to procedural violations. Despite this, Weinstein remained incarcerated, as he had previously received an additional sentence of 16 years in a separate case in Los Angeles.
The next court hearing for his case is scheduled for April 14, 2026.
