Actor Elijah Wood, known for his role as Frodo Baggins in the iconic "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, commented on rumors about his possible return to the Middle-earth universe. He did not confirm his participation in the upcoming film "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," but stated that he would not want anyone else to play this role.
In a recent interview, the actor noted that negotiations about possible participation are indeed ongoing, but no official announcement has been made yet. According to Wood, he cannot disclose details until the official project announcement.
The discussion was prompted by comments from his colleague in the original trilogy, Sir Ian McKellen, who previously hinted to fans about the possible return of familiar characters in a new film.
"Nothing has been officially announced, but at the convention, Ian did lift the veil of secrecy a bit. So there is a chance. I cannot confirm anything until there is an official statement, but the prospect of a new film excites me greatly," the actor noted.
Wood admitted that news about new projects in the Tolkien universe evokes mixed feelings in him. On one hand, returning to the story of Middle-earth seems thrilling; on the other hand, the actor understands that fans always worry about the quality of sequels to iconic films.
Speaking about the possible replacement of actors, Wood supported Ian McKellen's position, who previously stated that he would not want anyone else to play Gandalf. Wood himself holds a similar opinion.
"I completely understand Ian. I also would not want anyone else to play Frodo while I am alive and able to do it," the actor emphasized.
The film "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" is set to tell a story that takes place between the events of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." The release of the film is scheduled for the end of 2027. The project will be produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, with the screenplay being created with the participation of Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
It is also reported that actress Anya Taylor-Joy is in negotiations for possible participation in the film.
