Doctor: Pain in the left side after eating may indicate gastritis and pancreatitis

Pain in the left side after eating can indicate both harmless and serious health problems, said general practitioner Alexander Goryachev.

Among the common causes, the specialist mentioned overeating or consuming overly fatty foods. The fact is that stomach stretching leads to heaviness and dull pain in the left hypochondrium. Another factor is increased gas production: gas accumulation in the intestines causes bloating and sharp sensations, especially after consuming legumes, carbonated drinks, or large amounts of fiber.

Gastritis and inflammation of the pancreas can also lead to post-meal pain. In gastritis, discomfort appears shortly after eating and is accompanied by heartburn, nausea, or a feeling of fullness in the stomach. In pancreatitis, pain occurs after a hearty or fatty meal, may radiate to the back, and is associated with nausea, vomiting, and weakness.

The doctor considers diseases of the spleen, such as its enlargement or inflammation, to be the most dangerous cause. In such cases, pain is localized on the left under the ribs, may intensify after eating, and is accompanied by fever or weakness. If pain is regular or worsening, it is necessary to consult a doctor: blood tests, abdominal ultrasound, gastroscopy, and other examinations are prescribed for diagnosis.
