Sitting Can Be Beneficial: How Active Time in Place Helps the Brain

Prolonged sitting has long been considered harmful to health, but new research shows that not only the duration matters, but also the type of activity during sitting.

Scientists from the University of Queensland analyzed 85 scientific papers on the impact of sedentary activity on cognitive functions. It was found that so-called 'active' sitting — when the brain is engaged in tasks, reading, or learning — positively affects memory, executive functions, and other cognitive abilities.

At the same time, 'passive' sitting, such as prolonged television watching, is more often associated with negative changes in the brain and an increased risk of dementia. Despite the moderate effects, researchers note their statistical significance.

Paul Gardiner, the group leader, points out that most people spend many hours sitting every day. Therefore, it is important to use this time effectively: instead of grabbing the remote, pick up a book or engage in mental exercises — simple actions that help maintain brain health in older age.

The scientists suggest updating recommendations for a sedentary lifestyle, emphasizing active mental activities while sitting and short breaks for movement. 'Health advice can shift from simple words like “sit less” to encouraging mentally active activities while seated. This will help people maintain cognitive functions and reduce the risk of dementia,' noted Gardiner.
