What Are Hiccups

Hiccups are involuntary and synchronous contractions of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. They are accompanied by a sharp inhalation and subsequent closure of the vocal cords, which creates the characteristic sound. Hiccups can be short-lived or chronic if they last for an extended period.

Why Do Hiccups Occur

Some of the most common causes include:

  • overeating;
  • consuming carbonated drinks that cause bloating;
  • drinking water while eating;
  • talking at the table;
  • swallowing air while laughing or shouting;
  • consuming alcohol;
  • inhaling polluted air (smoke, dust);
  • sudden fright or stress;
  • smoking on an empty stomach.

How to Get Rid of Hiccups

There are several simple methods that can help stop hiccups:

  • drink a sufficient amount of water in one go;
  • take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds, and then slowly exhale;
  • chew a little salt, a piece of lemon, or a sugar cube;
  • stick your tongue out forward and upward, then lower it down;
  • inhale air, exhale it into a paper bag, and then take a breath from the same bag.

If hiccups persist for a long time, are accompanied by pain, or occur too frequently, it is advisable to consult a doctor. In rare cases, they may be a symptom of diseases of the nervous system, digestive organs, or metabolic disorders.
