Research suggests a possible link between caffeine consumption and a reduced risk of developing asthma in obese individuals. It is hypothesized that the effect occurs through changes in gut microbiota. This is reported by the Journal of Asthma.
Scientists analyzed data from 3,700 participants with asthma and 27,900 individuals without the disease. The results showed an inverse correlation: the higher the caffeine consumption, the lower the risk of obesity-related asthma. The study's author, Yue Wang from Nanjing Medical University, confirmed the existence of a causal relationship.
When studying the role of gut microbiota, it was found that 14.9 percent of the effect is mediated by bacteria of the genus Collinsella. Additionally, researchers proposed that caffeine may influence the risk of developing the disease through corticosteroid signaling pathways.
Thus, regular consumption of coffee or caffeine potentially reduces the risk of asthma in obese individuals; however, the mechanism of action depends on the state of the gut flora. Further research is needed to confirm the protective effect and determine the optimal dose of caffeine.
