The International Diabetes Federation has officially recognized a new form of chronic disease — type 5 diabetes.
Scientists note that this disease has gone unnoticed for years and is often misdiagnosed.
The International Diabetes Federation has officially recognized type 5 diabetes as a distinct form of the disease associated with chronic undernutrition and impaired development of the pancreas. This is reported on the organization's official website.
Who Can Get Type 5 Diabetes?
According to the International Diabetes Federation, type 5 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in thin adolescents and young adults with a body mass index below 18.5 (the threshold for normal weight). Predominantly, these are residents of low- and middle-income countries.
Scientists estimate that around 25 million people worldwide live with this form of diabetes, a significant portion of whom remain undiagnosed or are mistakenly considered to have type 1 diabetes.
Symptoms and Treatment of Type 5 Diabetes?
The symptoms of type 5 diabetes are similar to other forms of the disease — thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, headache, and slow wound healing. Insulin therapy is often ineffective in this case.
Therefore, experts recommend dietary adjustments with an emphasis on protein and nutrients to stabilize blood sugar levels.
