Warm, Stylish, and Cozy: How to Wear a 'Grandma' Cardigan in Winter and Look Modern

Remember how lace items were very trendy in the summer — those that looked like your grandmother crocheted them? Well, it’s no surprise that this theme has continued into the cold season — only now we are collectively shifting our attention to cardigans. What styles to choose and how to properly style them this season is explained by stylist Masha Vedernikova.

What is Today Called a Grandma Cardigan

This is not about a random sweater from a summer cottage dresser, but about a piece with character. "Distinctive features: dense, high-quality wool or mohair, noticeable interesting knitting, large buttons, loose fit, and a bit of 'handmade' mood. The modern version holds its shape, does not stretch at the elbows, and respects proportions. Length up to the waist or mid-thigh, slightly dropped shoulder, and a clean neckline — in general, an interesting and cute fashion renaissance without the feeling of retro theater," says the expert.

Proportions and Pairings That Work

The cardigan loves balance. If the top is voluminous, the bottom should be fitted: straight jeans without excess folds, smooth trousers, a narrow midi skirt. On the figure, this reads as warmth plus structure, not as a layered shapeless mass. For long models, it is useful to define the waist with a belt or button up the top buttons and leave the bottom loose. On cool days, a thin turtleneck or white shirt under the cardigan will come in handy. The contrast of textures — knitwear on top and smooth cotton below — makes the look more interesting and calm.

Materials and Texture: Warmth Without Scratchiness

The best options are merino, alpaca, cashmere, and thoughtful blends with a small percentage of acrylic for lightness. Mohair gives an airy fluff and requires a clear bottom; otherwise, visual noise occurs. If the skin is sensitive, choose gentle yarn and pay attention to the density of the knit. "In general, the more stable the fabric, the cleaner the shoulder sits, and the longer the item retains its shape. Large 'braids' pair well with minimalist trousers and loafers, while pearl ribbing looks sophisticated with jeans and Chelsea boots. A smooth knit easily fits into office dress codes and replaces a blazer on weekdays," advises the stylist.

Color, Prints, and Styling for Day and Evening

The winter base is simple: milk, camel, dark blue, graphite. These shades elevate the status of any item nearby and withstand active accessories. If you want to play, opt for argyle, fine stripes, or deep shades like cherry and forest green. Prints always require calm support, so it’s better to add a solid bottom and minimalist shoes to a checkered pattern. The main thing is to pair the cardigan only with current items, nothing outdated!

For work, a cardigan can easily replace a blazer, but you need to choose the ensemble correctly to avoid turning into Mary Ivanovna from accounting. A white shirt, gray trousers, a medium-width belt, and one accent piece like a watch or earrings will do. For going out, a satin skirt, a thin top, and a draped cardigan are enough. In everyday life, pairing with straight jeans and chunky boots creates Scandinavian calmness, while with a narrow midi skirt and knee-high boots, it results in urban retro without naphthalene.

Smart Shopping

In stores, look at the shoulder fit, weight of the item, and the elastic at the edge — a good cardigan doesn’t require alterations and fits right away. Vintage offers outstanding hardware and knit density, but the composition and condition of the seams are important. In the mass market, models with a clean neckline and large but unobtrusive buttons win. Such a choice will survive several winters and fit into any wardrobe.
