The microwave is one of the most important appliances in the kitchen, so keeping it clean is truly essential.
The microwave is probably one of the most important appliances in your kitchen. And, of course, it is essential to keep it clean. So, what is the best way to clean a microwave? Cleaning experts Michael Silva-Nash, Lauren Hauser, and Tim Conn shared their tips in the pages of Martha Stewart.
Method 1: Vinegar
This simple and inexpensive solution can come in handy when dealing with a greasy microwave. Just take a clean cloth, dampen it with water mixed with vinegar, and wipe away the stains.
"An alternative method is to pour half a cup of water and half a cup of vinegar into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat the solution in the microwave on high for five minutes and let it sit for another ten minutes so the acidic steam coats the walls and loosens the grime," says Silva-Nash.
After that, wipe away the grime with a soft clean cloth.
Method 2: Baking Soda
To remove more stubborn stains, mix baking soda with water to form a paste.
"Apply it to the stained areas and let it sit for five minutes before gently wiping it away with a damp sponge or microfiber cloth," explained the expert.
Method 3: Lemon
The acid in lemon juice helps to cut through grease, while the natural oils refresh and eliminate odors. For this, pour water into a microwave-safe bowl and squeeze the juice of one lemon into it. Then place the bowl with the solution in the microwave.
"Let the microwave run on high for two minutes. Remove the bowl and wipe the inside of the microwave with a damp microfiber cloth," explained Silva-Nash.
Method 4: Chemical Cleaners
If you prefer store-bought cleaners, use only those specifically designed for microwave use, says expert Lauren Hauser. When spraying, be careful to avoid splashes on electrical components and the control panel.
"If you have burnt grease, thoroughly cover it, then let the cleaner sit for two to three minutes to break down the grime and dried stains," she emphasized.
After that, wipe the interior with a damp microfiber cloth or sponge, rinsing it frequently. Once you’ve removed the grease and cleaner residue, allow the interior to air dry or wipe it dry.
"Do not leave the cleaner on longer than recommended, and do not let it dry on the surface, as residues will be difficult to remove later. If the grease is stubborn, reapply or use a soft brush," Hauser advised.
Cleaning professional Tim Conn recommends avoiding aggressive cleaning agents for the microwave.
"Use gentle, non-toxic, or eco-friendly cleaners as often as possible to reduce the number of toxins in the air," he says.
Common Mistakes in Microwave Care
Perhaps the most common mistake is that people delay cleaning.
"Leftover food particles not only harden over time but can also absorb microwave energy and create burnt spots that can damage the interior," warned Silva-Nash.
According to him, to avoid this, spills and splatters should be cleaned up immediately by wiping the microwave with warm water and dish soap. If the spill is stubborn, you can heat a bowl of water to soften the stains and then wipe them away.
"Don’t forget to thoroughly clean the corners, edges, and hidden spots where grease tends to accumulate. And remember to rinse or dry the microwave after cleaning, otherwise, unwanted odors and even mold may develop over time," adds Conn.
