3 Myths About Contact Lenses That Many Still Believe

Contact lenses have long been a popular alternative to glasses, but there are many myths surrounding them that scare and confuse people. Ophthalmologists debunk three of the most common misconceptions that everyone should know.

Myth 1. Lenses Harm the Eyes

Quality lenses are completely safe when worn and cared for properly. They do not damage the cornea and do not cause eye diseases if the usage instructions are followed.

Myth 2. A Lens Can "Roll Back" Behind the Eye

This fear is one of the most persistent. In reality, it is physically impossible for a lens to "escape" behind the eye or into the brain. The eye is covered by a thin transparent membrane—the conjunctiva—which tightly connects to the white part of the eye (sclera). A lens can shift under the eyelid, but it will not move beyond this "dead end."

Myth 3. You Cannot Sleep in Lenses

Regular lenses should indeed be removed before sleeping. However, there are special lenses that allow for overnight wear. The danger of sleeping in regular lenses is not related to them "sticking" to the eye, but rather to a lack of oxygen for the cornea. If a lens has dried out, it may temporarily stick more, but a few drops of moisturizing solution will solve the problem.

Proper use of contact lenses makes them comfortable and safe—just follow the recommendations of your ophthalmologist and the manufacturer's instructions.
