Without a Drop of Alcohol: The New Winter Trend — Mulled Wine That Even Kids Can Enjoy

Making non-alcoholic mulled wine is very simple — use grape juice or a non-alcoholic wine drink instead of wine. This mulled wine will be just as tasty as the classic version.

The most common base for non-alcoholic mulled wine is red or white grape juice. First of all, it resembles classic mulled wine in both taste and color. Additionally, the juice has natural sweetness, so there is no need to add much sugar;

The juice already contains the fruitiness and acidity required for mulled wine. The spices open up well in a warm sweet base. The drink turns out to be rich and aromatic.

Which Juice to Choose for the Drink:

  • for "red" mulled wine — dark grape, cherry, or pomegranate,

  • for "white" — white grape, apple, or pear.

If you choose non-alcoholic wine for the mulled wine, the combination with spices will yield a taste that is as close as possible to the classic alcoholic drink. Moreover, it will have a better balance of acidity and sweetness.

Non-Alcoholic Mulled Wine Recipe

Ingredients:

1 liter of grape juice or non-alcoholic wine

1 orange (sliced into rounds)

1 apple (sliced into wedges)

2–3 cinnamon sticks

3–5 star anise

4–6 cloves

3–4 slices of ginger or ½ tsp grated

1–2 tbsp honey or sugar

Preparation:

  • Pour the juice or non-alcoholic wine into a pot. Add the spices. Add the orange rounds and apple.

  • Heat on low until 70–80°C. The main thing is not to boil, otherwise the spices will become bitter.

  • Keep on heat for 10–15 minutes to allow the spices to release their aroma.

  • Remove from heat, add honey or sugar, and stir. Let it steep for another 5 minutes.

  • Strain or serve with fruits — whichever you prefer.
