Today, a bag is not just an accessory that serves a functional role. It has become one of the main elements of every woman's style, expressing her character, taste, and personality.
In the past, the classic understanding of fashion was dictated by clear norms and recommendations regarding bag selection, including its size, color scheme, and material. But how important is adherence to these rules today, when the desire to look unique breaks all templates? This is something we will explore with designer Zinaida Serova.
Rules That Have Become Conditional
It has become established that the choice of a bag must adhere to a number of strict requirements set by classic etiquette. Let’s consider the main ones that modern fashionistas often overlook.
Rule No. 1: The size of the bag corresponds to the height of the owner
Traditionally, it was considered necessary to take a woman's height into account when selecting an accessory. Petite girls were recommended to use compact and refined items, while taller women were offered larger shapes. “However, nowadays many ladies freely reject this recommendation, proving that different sizes suit any figure. Short women confidently choose oversized transformer bags, large backpacks, and crossbody bags, while tall women opt for miniature knitted bags or beaded models,” says the designer.

Rule No. 2: A harmonious combination of colors is essential
Another rule was the requirement for the bag's color to harmonize with shoes or clothing. Previously, the standard was to match similar shades or have an exact color match. Designer: “Modern women boldly challenge this limitation, actively playing with bright contrasts, daring combinations of different materials and textures, intentionally departing from the traditional monochromatic approach. For example, a bright pink bag can be paired with classic black shoes — this technique adds freshness and creativity to the look.”
Rule No. 3: Natural leather symbolizes status
For many years, it was prestigious to have a bag made of natural leather, as this material was associated with good taste and high social status. “Now the situation has changed: synthetic materials, eco-friendly leather substitutes, and sometimes even plastic and rubber have become full-fledged wardrobe elements, replacing expensive leather items, including in collections from famous brands,” adds our expert.

Rule No. 4: Separation of daytime and evening models
Not long ago, there was a clear distinction between daytime and evening bags. In the first half of the day, it was customary to choose modest functional models for everyday wear, while evenings were reserved for decorative embellishments and luxury. Zinaida: “The new generation of fashionistas blurs the lines between these categories, preferring expressive silhouettes, deep colors, and bold solutions, mixing everyday elements with festive details.”
Rule No. 5: The main thing is functionality
It was previously believed that a bag should be convenient and spacious. However, recently modern fashionistas are increasingly rejecting practicality in favor of originality. “Bags with unconventional shapes and designs can turn out to be completely impractical, but this does not stop bold ladies striving to stand out from the crowd. For example, bags shaped like animals or geometric figures are becoming not just accessories, but real fashion statements,” assures the designer.

Flexible Approach
Abandoning traditional rules creates space for freedom of creativity and self-expression. Instead of rigid requirements, the modern girl is guided by her own preferences, mood, and sense of comfort. This approach allows for the creation of bright images, emphasizing individuality and a sense of style.
An important role here is played by visual awareness and knowledge of current trends. "The ideal solution is a compromise between classic norms and fresh trends, allowing for a harmonious combination of appearance with inner desires," adds our expert.
Modern fashion is tolerant: strict rules are gradually giving way to creative self-expression, inspiring contemporary fashionistas to follow their own path and feel free in their choices.
