Winter in our latitudes requires not only warmth and protection from biting winds but also expressive accents that bring an outfit together in seconds. The right scarf changes proportions, adds texture and color, and makes even the simplest and most modest ensemble more noticeable. Stylist Alina Lobanova offered advice on which accessory to choose and how to integrate it into your winter wardrobe.
Chunky Knit — A Modern Textural Accent
Winter 2025−26 is all about chunky knits: braids, "barrels", textured ribbing. Such scarves easily become the focal point of an outfit, even if the rest of the ensemble is minimalist. "Wear them with a classic-cut coat — black or camel — and emphasize the texture: let the scarf stand out rather than fade away. Add a matching beanie or a smooth headband to enhance the vertical line and visually elongate the silhouette. If the top is very textured, keep the bottom very calm (even down to the shoes), then the scarf will work as a singular art object," suggests the expert.
Color Spot Against a Neutral Background
If your wardrobe is composed of muted shades — gray, dark blue, camel, black — a scarf can become a bright spot: deep burgundy, rich pine green, crepe indigo, or plum. Wear it with smooth trousers, a leather jacket, and a turtleneck sweater, and the scarf will become the finishing touch of the outfit. Choose a bag and shoes in a color palette that complements the scarf, which will harmonize the look effortlessly. For a gentle contrast, try pairing a cool top with a warm shade of scarf, such as graphite and cherry.

Long Blanket Scarf
The maxi format of the scarf is making a comeback: choose a length that allows you to wrap it a couple of times or even drape it like a poncho. This option is especially good with a straight coat, a basic turtleneck, and Chelsea jeans. "The main thing is to keep the lower line simple, without bulky accessories under the scarf. Try asymmetrical draping over one shoulder and secure it with an invisible brooch; this will add architecture. On trips, such a scarf replaces a blanket and can be thrown over a blazer or leather jacket," says the stylist.
Materials and Texture — From Mohair to Cashmere
Cashmere, natural wool, mohair with a slight nap — these are always favorites, so this season is no exception. Chunky knits made from these materials elevate the status of the item nearby. When paired with clothing made from smooth fabrics (wool, tweed, membrane), the texture of the scarf becomes a graphic accent. For a bolder look, combine a fuzzy scarf with leather or patent boots; the contrast of textures works for style.

How to Combine with Accessories and Proportions
When the scarf is large, keep the rest minimal: a coat without unnecessary details, a medium-sized bag, and solid-colored shoes. If the scarf is narrow and lightweight — it suits more complex items: a leather jacket, a midi skirt, high boots. An example of a styling trick before the real frost hits: tuck the ends of the scarf inside the coat and leave the V-neck open to showcase an interesting sweater or jewelry. If you want playfulness, tie a knot on one side and shift the draping; asymmetry livens up sometimes dull classics.
