The stylist named 3 trendy hats for autumn: how to choose 'your model'

Autumn is not a reason to hide under a hood. On the contrary, it is the perfect time to add character and expressiveness to your look with just one detail — headwear. Svetlana Astakhova, a fashion and style expert, named three models that must appear in your wardrobe this season.

“Fashion collections offer dozens of options, but three models confidently hold their positions and have already become favorites among stylists and street fashionistas — the cap, beanie, and woolen panama. They will easily fit into any wardrobe and add style to your look,” says the expert.

Cap: a bit of retro and self-confidence

Caps, once worn by taxi drivers, artists, and Parisian journalists, are back in fashion. Over the past twenty years, this model has transitioned from utilitarian to status — today, caps are returning to women's wardrobes as a stylish accent with a touch of retro.

“Their main advantage is versatility. They pair well with the dense fabrics of the autumn season and add graphic elements to the outfit. Caps can elevate even the simplest look: wear jeans or straight trousers, a chunky sweater, and a coat — and suddenly, the usual basic set looks well thought out. Flat shoes, a large bag, and glasses with clear lenses will complete the look in the spirit of 'smart' casual,” advises the fashion and style expert.

The dense fabric of the cap protects against the wind, while the brim shields from the rain. Practical and yet — with character.

Beanie: simplicity that is always appropriate

The beanie has long become a classic. Its shape is the most concise, while the possibilities are endless. This is the secret of its popularity: such a hat suits almost any style and always looks appropriate.

“In autumn, it is especially relevant: warm, comfortable, and easy to pair. It can be worn with a puffer jacket, a coat, or a voluminous trench. The simplicity of the design allows for color play,” says Svetlana.

Light-haired girls can opt for milky, powdery, or mint shades. Brunettes can go for rich, deep colors. But there are no strict rules. If you complement the beanie's color with suitable makeup or accessories, you can allow yourself any experiments.

“This headwear looks best in relaxed, sporty, and street styles: jeans, sneakers, chunky knits, and a crossbody bag. But if you add a coat and leather gloves, you can achieve a refined urban style,” notes the stylist.

Woolen Panama: coziness with a hint of creativity

The panama hat has long ceased to be just a companion for hot days. In a woolen version, it transforms into a cozy autumn accessory that looks equally good with a classic coat and a loose-fitting suit.

The soft texture adds warmth to the look, while the shape brings lightness. “The woolen panama looks less strict than a cap and not as sporty as a beanie — it’s something in between, universal. It can be paired with a chunky scarf, a hobo bag, and low-heeled shoes,” says our expert.

This model suits square and oval face shapes, while the soft lines visually soften the features. For girls with round faces, it’s better to choose a panama with a more defined crown, as it will elongate the silhouette.

How to choose the right headwear

Face shape, hair color, and overall wardrobe style are three factors to consider.

  • Oval faces suit almost all models.
  • Square faces — soft, rounded silhouettes (beanie, panama).
  • Round faces — structured shapes, such as caps.

“Color plays an equally important role. Light hair suits pastel and cool beige tones, while dark hair looks good in rich burgundy, green, and blue. Minimalists can choose neutral shades and simple shapes, while those who love experiments can go for texture combinations: leather, tweed, dense wool,” recommends the stylist.

Final touch

In autumn, it’s important not only how the headwear looks but also how it “behaves” when worn. It should sit loosely, not deform, and retain its shape if you suddenly get caught in the rain. Natural wool, cashmere, or alpaca will last longer and look more luxurious.

“Don’t be afraid of accents. A bright color, unusual texture, or interesting shape can enliven even a basic look. For those who prefer calmness, matte surfaces and dark shades are always a good choice — they always look expensive,” reminds the expert.

Headwear completes the look. It not only keeps you warm in cool weather but also helps create the right mood. A cap adds confidence, a beanie brings comfort and freedom, while a panama offers lightness and softness. Autumn loves details, so it’s time to find that one piece that will become your fashion “trick.”
