Women’s Check-Up: Mandatory Examinations for Health

Regular monitoring by a gynecologist is key to prevention. Even in the absence of symptoms, an annual check-up helps detect diseases at early stages. The specialist explained what a women’s check-up includes, who needs to undergo it, and how often.

Expert: Lina Irkha, gynecologist and ultrasound specialist

What is a Women’s Check-Up and What Examinations Does It Include

A check-up is a comprehensive examination of the female body for the prevention of various diseases.

It is not limited to an examination in the gynecological chair and taking tests. The main goal is a comprehensive approach. A woman comes in on a specific day of her cycle (preferably days 7–15 of the menstrual cycle) for a detailed medical history collection.

The doctor asks about past illnesses, then conducts an examination in the chair, performs colposcopy, and takes two key tests.

Main Procedures:

  • PAP test — a cytological examination of the cervix to detect cancer and precancerous changes.
  • Ultrasound diagnostics of the pelvic organs — mandatory for women of all ages.
  • Thyroid and breast ultrasound — recommended for a comprehensive assessment of health status.
  • Hormonal tests — after the age of 20, every two years if necessary, for early detection of hormone-dependent diseases.

Who Should Have a Gynecological Check-Up

Annual comprehensive examinations are recommended for all women starting at age 18.

Preparation for the Examination

  • Come for the examination on the correct days of the cycle (days 5–15).
  • Abstain from sexual intercourse for 2–3 days before the visit.
  • Do not use local antiseptics and antibiotics for 2 weeks.

Even if there are no complaints, a preventive check-up is mandatory. After the examination, the doctor assesses the need for additional studies.

Frequency of Check-Ups Depending on Age

  • Young women — more than once a year, every six months if there is a complicated medical history.
  • Women in menopause without issues — once every two years.
  • PAP test after 60 years — if there are no diseases, take it once every two years or not at all according to European recommendations.

What a Women’s Check-Up Can Detect

Such an examination helps diagnose all gynecological disorders and find the causes of diseases at an early stage.
